Bearded Dragon Growth Chart

Here you’ll find simple interactive tool to check bearded dragons’ growth by age, as well as the ‘classic’ table.

Size of a bearded dragon depends on several factors:

Species, where the most common (also the largest) species of dragon, is Pogona vitticeps. It grows up to 24 inches. Since this is the most common pet, we’ll give a growth chart for this one.

Sex (males are bigger than females, and their measurements will be given in the table)

Nutrition, conditions in the enclosure and thus – overall health.

How do you measure bearded dragon’s length?

– From the nose to the tip of the tail. Unlike iguanas, where snout to vent size is also measured.

Does the size of the terrarium affect the growth of the bearded dragon?

No. Some users believe that a smaller terrarium can prevent the dragon from reaching its natural size. This is not only inhumane, but also incorrect – the size of the cage does not affect the growth of any species of reptile. What does affect, however, is poor nutrition and poor living conditions in the enclosure. This, unfortunately, usually goes in a package with owners who keep their reptile in an inadequate environment. In that case you get a sick and unhappy animal, which, in addition, has not grown enough.

As for the size of the terrarium, it is recommended that it should be at least 48 x 24 x 24 ” (120 x 60 x 60cm).

This enclosure size applies to an adult bearded dragon, but even if you get a young beardie the best thing would be to buy this size right away. Bearded dragons grow fast, so it’s pointless to buy several small terrariums to follow their growth (although pet stores might suggest you the opposite, since they want to sell you more enclosures). This is also a big plus for bearded dragons as pets (compared to iguanas) – you can get enclosures for them in stores (for iguanas they have to be custom built)
